Many workers who need to lift heavy objects on the job wear back belts -- also called back supports or abdominal belts. But the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) does not recommend using a back belt to prevent injuries, because studies have not confirmed that these belts do, in fact, work.
